Damning new research has revealed that UK tradespeople lose more than £1,300 a year due to bad weather, with the average person having to miss a week’s worth of work every 12 months.
The study was carried out by IronmongeryDirect and asked tradespeople about the impact of bad weather on their work and finances. The findings revealed that, on average, tradespeople lose 7.2 days every year because of rain, snow and wind. The typical UK day rate is currently £184, which means that tradies are losing out on £1,325 every 12 months.
This figure could well be on even higher, as 38 per cent of people admitted to losing more than one week’s worth of work, whilst a further 10 per cent had to miss than a fortnight. The reality for self-employed people is that they don’t get paid for days they don’t work. Because of this, 29 per cent of tradespeople said they can’t afford to pause jobs for bad weather.
Some trades are more likely to be affected by the weather than others. Unsurprisingly, landscaper gardeners suffer the most and 85 per cent of them have to pause work when conditions go downhill.
Landscapers also the most days each year - ten on average - but plumbers are hit the hardest financially. With the average plumber charging £265 a day, by missing almost a week of work each year, they lose £1,723.
