Tool theft is an issue that continues to affect many tradespeople in the UK. In fact, during dark winter months thefts increase further, according to data from Simply Business.

Thefts spike in winter months due to limited daylight hours, which provides thieves with more opportunity to steal than during summer. Data from Simply Business showed there were over 290,000 insurance claims between 2017 and 2021 for tool theft, with higher percentages taking place during winter months.

Over 10 per cent of all tool thefts during this period were reported in November, with over 9.5 per cent taking place in October. Meanwhile, the number of tool theft claims reported in January and February were above the annual average.

The data shows that the number of tool theft claims dips in the summer, with just six per cent reported in August. The number of claims reported in May, June, and July are also below the annual average.

These combined thefts cost UK tradespeople an estimated £2.8 billion.

Tips to prevent tool theft from occurring

As with many things in life, prevention is better than cure. Below, we’ve included some ways to deter thieves and reduce potential thefts – and ways to help recover tools if they are stolen.

1) Remove tools from your van overnight. Storing tools inside is safer, as even the most secure work vans can prove vulnerable.

2) Consider when you park your van to deter thieves. Park in busy, well-lit areas which are in view of CCTV.

3) Check your insurance and invest in tools insurance to help pay for the cost of replacement tools should they be stolen.

4) Mark your tools and valuable items to make them easier to recover and identify if they’re found by police.
