The traditional British garden is under threat from extreme heat, the Royal Horticultural Society has said. This summer has seen record high temperatures, which reached 40.3C (104.5F) in Lincolnshire in July.
As the climate crisis continues, temperatures such as this are likely to happen more frequently. Another issue currently facing the industry are droughts.
Currently, droughts have been declared in several areas of England, with 2022 proving to be one of the driest summers on record – meaning gardeners will have to renew their methods of hydration as summer hosepipe bans are expected to be the norm going forward.
Composting can increase soil’s capacity to hold water. This can prepare a garden for drought and protect it against heavy downpours of rain.
The colour of flowerpots can also make a difference. Black pots attract heat, so choosing lighter colours will reflect light instead.
Water butts are also becoming increasingly popular for reducing water usage. Gardeners are also choosing plants which can deal with both droughts and colder, wetter conditions e.g. plants such as salvias and dahlias are more resistant to heat.
