When lockdown measures were implemented back in March, thousands of businesses across all sectors in the United Kingdom were faced with a difficult task to stay afloat. However, with the public confined to essential journeys to and from their homes, many turned their attention to improving their own homes.
There was some positive news for garden centres across the nation as new statistics showed that Brits have been getting hands-on in their gardens, spending a huge £3.7bn since the beginning of lockdown.
The research, which was carried out by American Express, found that the average adult had spent around £105 on garden improvements during this period, a boost which was inevitably helped by many being forced to stay at home.
Of the 2,000 people that were surveyed, 35% admitted that they had spent an average of £36 on outdoor plants. A further 31% spent around £27 each on compost, and seeds were also a popular purchase, with 24% of those surveyed spending an average of £14 each.
Despite the unprecedented times that we're facing, it's great to see that the general public have seized the opportunity to enjoy time in the garden and spend money on improvements they may otherwise have been too busy to carry out.
