For many retail business owners, sustainability is probably something that never even crossed their minds until recently. However, with the whole world trying to be more environmentally friendly, there’s more pressure to each make an effort.

So, how can you make your business more sustainable?

Investigate packaging alternatives

One of the most obvious methods of reducing your business’s carbon footprint is to switch to a more environmentally-friendly packaging alternative. Of course, a ‘zero packaging’ approach is simply unrealistic for many retailers, but choosing to use paper packaging over plastic packaging can help to make a big difference over time.

Offset your sales with sustainable investments

Whilst pressure is being put on business to be as sustainable as possible, consumers also feel like they need to play a part in saving the planet too. You could help both you and your customers’ sustainability efforts by offering to plant one tree for every 100 sales that you make.

Not only will this help to reduce your own carbon footprint, but it will make your customers feel like they have also played a part and it could have a positive impact on their shopping decisions.

Get third-party certifications

Many industries have a dedicated governing body that helps to maintain product quality and ethical standards across the board. Where this is applicable, making an effort to reach the requirements set will instil more confidence from your consumers.

Whichever way you look at it, adopting a more sustainable business plan means that everyone wins: you, your customers and the planet!
