To address this pressing issue, the APHC is offering guidance to tradespeople on safeguarding their vans and toolkits from theft:

Enhance Security Measures:
Invest in additional security features such as deadlocks, steel-clad locks, and reinforced doors to deter thieves. Consider installing extra alarms and immobilisers to thwart attempted break-ins. 

Lock Up Religiously:
Always ensure your van is securely locked whenever it's unattended, even for a brief period. This includes closing all windows and doors to eliminate any opportunities for opportunistic thieves.

Secure Tool Storage:
Keep valuables and tools out of sight, especially when your van is parked. Consider storing tools indoors overnight and leaving your van empty to minimize temptation. Visible deterrents, such as stickers indicating an empty van overnight, can also dissuade thieves.

Choose Strategic Parking:
Opt for well-lit, busy areas with CCTV surveillance when parking your vehicle. These locations act as a deterrent to potential thieves and increase the likelihood of witnesses or CCTV footage in case of a break-in.

Insure Your Tools:
While preventive measures are crucial, it's essential to have a backup plan. Invest in tool insurance to ensure comprehensive coverage in the event of theft.

Stay Vigilant:
Maintain a detailed inventory of your tools and keep track of their whereabouts at all times. Retain receipts, especially for high-value items, to facilitate insurance claims if necessary.
