No doubt you’ve heard of 3D printing, you may have even seen a 3D printer in action, but could the future see us using them to construct buildings?

Before you scoff into your tea two, you should know that this is already a reality. A number of residential buildings have already been built using 3D printing technology. The process is said to save between 30 - 60% of construction arisings and waste, and decrease production time by 50-70%.

Most recently an office in Dubai was fully 3D printed, dubbed ‘The Office of the Future’ offering 250sqm of workspace. It cost just $140,000 and took 17 days from start to finish.

However, can 3D printing ever be a realistic alternative to quality craftsmanship? Could it ever replicate a building as large and impressive as Gaudi’s famous Sagrada Familia in Barcelona? (Shown below).
