According to a post-lockdown survey, 83 percent of 18-34 year olds describe gardening as “cool” and 54 percent would rather amble around a garden centre than dance the night away in a club.
The appeal of gardening and horticulture to younger audiences is rooted in mindfulness, with a desire to make their homes and gardens a nicer place to be, to improve mental health, and create a space they can escape to.
As more people begin to take a keener interest in gardening – even if it comes in the form of a houseplant on a windowsill – garden centres across the UK are expected to continue benefitting financially from their new fans, with sales remaining steady amid the current cost of living crisis.
Kev Smith, Head of Marketing at Draper Tools, who commissioned the research, said: “The popularity among young adults is fantastic to see, we knew it was popular, but even we were surprised by the outpouring of love for it.
"There’s a tendency to think of gardening as an activity for older people, but this study proves that gardening really is for everyone, whatever your age.”
Two thirds (66 percent) also said they love shopping for gardening items – whether that’s plants, seeds, or tools, with 58 percent revealing they’ve spent more on gardening during the past 12 months or so than ever before.
To make the most of the new audience, ensure your garden centre is packed with all the gardening essentials needed for garden newbies and veterans alike. From lawn feed to gardening gloves, discover tonnes of top brand garden products at Stax.
